A little bit more about me

Hi there. I am Greg. I am a 55-year-old runner from Ohio. I am not very fast, but I enjoy running quite a bit. It is one of the main things which defines me.

I also have Retinitis Pigmentosa, which as the name implies, affects the retinal. Basically, it decreases peripheral, causes night blindness, causes a lot of floaters, along with several other prizes. It stems from Usher’s Syndrome, which can also cause hearing loss. I only found this out last October and found that I just might be legally blind with around 15 degrees peripheral (20 is legally blind). Despite this, I still run. RP traditionally does not cause total blindness, just a lot of fuzziness. I have a lot of familiar running routes around the neighborhood, so I can deal with fuzziness.

I have been running for 15 years. I unfortunately do not know when I first started running, but I do know that I did it to lose weight. Then I became addicted to running. Not a bad addiction to have.

I am married to Mindy. We live in a small Ohio town. We met at a 5K, so running helped me find the love of my life, too. We have a beagle named Banjo, a rescue dog. He is a good boy. Sometimes. We also have two of Mindy’s grandsons. I would rather not go much into them.

I work a pretty menial job in retail for a nation-wide home improvement company. I have been there for almost 22 years and have worked in retail for 30 years. I do not do it for my love of people…sometimes, I feel like I could do without those, but that would be difficult in a retail environment.

About seven weeks ago, I had my left knee scoped. It was to clean up from a meniscus tear coming from tripping over stuff. You know…bad eyesight. The knee certainly is not perfect, but I have been running on it for about a month. It is certainly improving.

Presently, I am training for the Chicago Marathon. That is a bucket list marathon for me. I am confident I will be healed enough to do OK during that run – but because it is a bucket list run, speed is not a priority. This will be my 36th marathon, my first being 10 years ago come October. My first was the Columbus Marathon, which I have done every year since except during the pandemic. It will be a week after Chicago this year…I still have not signed up for it and am still thinking about it. In the end, I will probably run it. Or walk it. Walking will probably be better.

I also have a love for baseball, food, computer games, science fiction, classic rock music and astronomy. Expect to see mentions of those as this progresses and I become more familiar with the site.

This is my first real blog attempt. I know, there is a lot to work on, but I hope I will get there eventually.
