It has been quite some time since I last posted—about 18 months, it would seem. That means this post will be a catch-up post, with some later posts filling in the blanks.
Since August of 2023, I did miss running the Chicago Marathon, but did run the Columbus half marathon that year.
In late March of 2024, Ruth Alexander and I started running together every once in a while on Tuesdays. She has experience in guiding blind runners during events.
In April, I ran half marathons in back-to-back days the following spring: The Xenia Half Marathon on April 7 and the Race the Eclipse Half Marathon on April 8. The Xenia Half was also the first race I was guided as a legally blind runner. Ruth Alexander was my guide.
In May 2025, I ran my first full in about 18 months in the Flying Pig Marathon.
Also, in May, I won a 5K—sort of. Everyone in the race got lost. I just got lost in a different direction and got unlost sooner than everyone else. Sometimes, being blind has its advantages.
Ran another half in the Great Miami Riverway Half marathon.
Finally, I ran the full Chicago Marathon in October with Ruth Alexander guiding me. That was quite the experience and a post in itself.
The week after running Chicago, we ran the Columbus Half Marathon. I wanted to run the full but was unsure my knee would handle it.
In November, the United States made a horrible mistake again. We did not learn from the first time.
In December, my eyesight really started falling apart. It was not so much the Retinitis Pigmentosa as it was cataracts resulting from shots that are necessary because of swelling caused by RP. At one point, my vision in my good right eye was 20/100, while my bad left eye was at 20/200.
In January 2025, that second mistake took hold and showed many people who were paying attention just how terrible it was. In some cases, that mistake proved to be worse than expected. Years of work have been destroyed, and years of hard work will be ahead as soon as that second mistake runs its course. That second mistake brought along some wealthy and very ignorant friends. One in particular seems akin to giving Nazi salutes. You all know the story.
In March of this year, I had cataract surgery. The left eye was first. I could tell there was some improvement, but in the end, that very weak eye is still a very weak eye. My eyesight is probably 20/150 at best. But at least it is not as cloudy. The right eye, on the other hand, has already shown vast improvement only days after the procedure. My eyesight there is around 20/30 to 20/40 – a vast improvement. Also, it’s not as fuzzy. My prescription glasses are not very useful, but I will look at getting a new prescription shortly. My eyes are still not that great.
I am currently training for the Flying Pig Full Marathon on May 5. I have also signed up for the Columbus Marathon in October.
So, that is it. Again, I will fill in all the details of the good stuff later. Some of the stuff was pretty exciting, and the things I will not cover will not be that exciting.
